Information System Based Implementation of Semester-to-Semester Progression at University of Botswana

J.S.J. Daka, University of Botswana

Abstract
The University of Botswana revised its undergraduate semester-to-semester progression regulations to improve the implementation of semesterisation. Although the university introduced semesterisation in 2002, the progression regulations were not fully implemented on the students’ information system mainly due to problems of interpretation. Due to this, a manual system was used. The manual system could not cope in making progression recommendations for all students leading to some regulations not being applied. This paper discusses main aspects of the regulations and their implementation via a computer program. The paper shows that a complete implementation of the progression regulation is possible using a computer program. The author used sample students’ academic results to provide semester recommendations which were found to be in agreement with the expected results. An information system based implementation ensures a uniform application of regulations.
