Abstract
There is a large proportion of the population in India that has very limited access to higher education (HE). Of this, the population of northern states in India seem to have it a bit worse than in their southern counterparts. The access to higher education is further problematized by a lack of access to personal computers, however there is a large proportion of the population that has access to mobile phone technology. In other countries that suffer similar access problems to computing, there is strong evidence to suggest the considered use of mobile technologies can enable a greater engagement in HE studies. Linked with this is the possibility that a flipped classroom methodology could offer HE in North India a way forward and one that could leverage this affordance. This paper reports on a preliminary, scoping study undertaken to understand what the level of consciousness of a flipped classroom methodology is and if there is any appetite to see this trialed in HE classrooms in North India. The subjects of this study where HE teachers currently running traditional classes. Based on the finding of this preliminary data collection, it is considered that this concept is worth exploring in greater depth.
